Philana & Lawrence | A Love Story with Family, Ramen & a Whole Lotta Fun
Philana and Lawrence’s story began the way all great love stories should — at happy hour.
They worked in the same building at Stanford, ran with the same friend group, and crossed paths more than a few times… but it wasn’t until one casual night out (where their friends totally ditched them early) that they ended up deep in conversation. About cars. Yep — cars. Lawrence, being the smooth guy he is, totally didn’t ask for her number (nerves), but lucky for all of us, that wasn’t the end of their story.
Their connection grew over a shared love of music festivals, and before hitting their first show together, they grabbed dinner at The House, wandered the city, and — as Philana would later admit — she realized, “Okay… he’s alright.” Fast forward a few years, and they were building something real — a love full of patience, humor, deep care, and space for each other’s full selves.
Weddings like this don’t just happen — they’re produced with heart, vision, and a whole lot of planning.
We hit the ground running with a fun brainstorm call, where I got to hear all about the moments Philana and Lawrence were most looking forward to — from their intimate first look in front of the Rengstorff House, the bubble-filled recessional, and even their late-night ramen moment.
From there, we followed up with a full site visit at the Rengstorff House — walking the venue together, running through their timeline, and mapping out exactly how we could shape the flow of the day so their photos reflected what mattered most: meaningful time with family, a vibe that felt lighthearted yet elegant, and space for candid, in-the-moment shots. We even reimagined parts of their ceremony layout to make sure the lighting hit just right and the entire experience felt natural, easy, and true to their vision.
We brainstormed everything from the family photo flow, to making sure everyone had a glass in hand for the toast, to pitching them on a group ramen photo idea (because obviously, ramen’s not just a snack — it’s a vibe).
This is exactly why I love being a photographer and a creative partner — when we design the experience together, the day flows better, the photos come out stronger, and the whole vibe feels like pure magic. Intentional? Yep. Collaborative? Always. A little extra? You bet.
When the day finally rolled around, everything we’d been dreaming up — plus a whole lot of that in-the-moment magic — came together in the best way.
We kicked things off with a sweet, love-filled tea ceremony at the family home. It was relaxed, meaningful, and packed with those quiet little moments that make you want to hit pause and soak it all in. Then it was off to the Rengstorff House, where Philana made her grand first look entrance — stepping out of the front door like the main character she is, with Lawrence waiting for her outside. Cue all the heart eyes.
Their ceremony was nothing short of stunning. The light? Chef’s kiss. It wrapped around them in the dreamiest way — making every moment, from their vows to their bubble-filled exit, feel like a movie scene.
Afterward, we hit all their favorite photo spots — soaking up that iconic window light, celebrating the gorgeous architecture of the house, snapping those Monica-style “Just one of them Days” shots Philana had her heart set on, and capturing all the playful, joy-filled moments in between.
And yes… the ramen photos? A total vibe. We got epic shots of just the two of them and some with their crew — because when your late-night snack is that good, it deserves a whole photo moment.
From chic black-and-whites to candid dance floor moments, this day flowed with love, laughter, and so many moments that felt effortless, joyful, and totally them.
